Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration in retail construction. McDonald’s restaurant in Market Drayton, UK, is a leading example. The project became the country’s first carbon net-zero restaurant and the first net-zero building delivered using Algeco’s offsite construction system, demonstrating how sustainable design and modular construction can work together to deliver high-performing retail environments.
Building sustainability into every stage
Achieving a carbon net-zero build was a key objective from the outset. Algeco delivered a fully integrated turnkey solution incorporating the kitchen, servery, dining area, offices, storage, customer facilities, together with external works including the car park and landscaping.
Around 80% of the building was manufactured in Algeco’s factory before installation on site. This reduced waste, improved quality control and allowed site preparation and manufacturing to take place simultaneously, significantly reducing the overall construction programme.
Designed to reduce environmental impact
The building incorporates a range of sustainable features, including responsibly sourced and recycled materials, sheep’s wool insulation, recycled plastic finishes, rainwater harvesting, renewable energy generation and energy-efficient building systems.
The lightweight modular structure also reduced the need for carbon-intensive foundations, while the building itself can be relocated, reconfigured or recycled, supporting a longer operational lifespan.
